Eldridge Street ProjectFrom Street to Shul: The Jewish East Side ExperienceBig Onion Walking Tours and the Eldridge Street Project join forces for a unique program that delves into the social, cultural and religious history of the Jewish East Side. Featuring a one-hour visit to the Eldridge Street Synagogue and a one-hour walking tour of the surrounding neighborhood, this rich, historian-led program employs primary sources, synagogue artifacts, and local maps and photos to evoke the lives of immigrant Jews. 1654 Society of Congregation Shearith IsraelBig Onion Walking Tours and the 1654 Society of Congregation Shearith Israel have partnered to welcome visitors to the historic Colonial Jewish cemetery of Chatham Square. Consecrated in 1656, this is the oldest extant Jewish cemetery in North America. More than twenty participants of the Revolutionary War are buried here as is Gershom Mendes Seixas (Americas first native born Hazan - present at the inauguration of George Washington) and Dr. Walter Jonas Judah (died in 1798 during the yellow fever epidemic). Previously closed to the public, the Chatham Square cemetery will be opened during select Big Onion tours. A $3 per person contribution to the 1654 Society is required. All contributions go to the restoration and preservation of this unique historic site. |

Lincoln Square BIDBig Onion and the Lincoln Square BID are pleased to offer Lincoln Square: Gateway to the Upper West Side, a free 90-minute tour of the Lincoln Square area, on the first and third Sunday of every month, May through October 2008. Tours meet at 2 PM at the south-west corner of Broadway & 60th Street, under the Jazz at Lincoln Center marquee. Private group tours are also available.
